Industry Expert Interview – Exploring Career Paths and Industry Trends
For this assignment I interviewed John Silva, a software engineer who has worked at several well-known companies. I chose John because he has moved around the industry, tried different roles, and built a lot of experience along the way. He’s also been something of a mentor for me we’ve bounced ideas off each other as developers, and I’ve looked to him for advice as I’ve been shaping my own career path after moving to California. John started by sharing how his career developed. He didn’t follow one set path but moved through different companies and projects, each time picking up new skills. He explained that while it’s important to know the technical side, being adaptable has been the real key. In tech, new frameworks and tools come out all the time, and he said you’ll drive yourself crazy trying to master everything. Instead, he focuses on learning the fundamentals, problem solving, and keeping up the ability to learn quickly. Those skills translate no matter what new tool or language shows up. When I asked him about challenges, John said the biggest one is the constant pace of change. Tech never slows down, and it’s easy to feel behind. But he sees that as part of the job if you’re curious and willing to keep learning, the challenge can also be the fun part.
We also talked about trends. John pointed out that automation and DevOps practices are now expected from developers, not just operations teams. Cloud platforms like AWS and Azure have become central to most companies, so knowing how to use them is just as important as coding itself. One of the best parts of the conversation was when I asked him: “If you could go back, what do you wish you had learned earlier that would have helped you now?” He said he wished he had put more focus on networking and collaboration at the start of his career. My Capstone work ties it all together with the full software lifecycle, which connects with his advice on looking at the big picture beyond just code. It also reinforced my own approach staying ambitious, curious, and open to learning from others.
Looking ahead, I plan to put more effort into building connections and learning from the people around me. I also want to keep experimenting with small hobby DevOps projects and keep sharpening my fundamentals while I prepare for certifications like AWS and Azure. Possible Capstone Ideas
After reviewing several capstone presentations, I started to think more seriously about what kind of project I could take on at the end of my program. These are not final decisions, but they represent areas that interest me and connect with some of the things I have been learning. One idea is a project focused on Neuralink and human-computer interaction. This could involve exploring how brain–computer interfaces might connect with software applications, looking at both the technical challenges and the ethical implications. While the hardware side may be outside the scope of my degree, I could design a software-based simulation or prototype that demonstrates how signals might be interpreted for accessibility or medical use. Another idea is to examine quantum computing in the cybersecurity era. As computing power grows, traditional encryption methods are going to face serious challenges. A project like this could investigate how quantum algorithms might break current security methods, and what new approaches might be developed to protect sensitive data. I would enjoy digging into both the theory and practical aspects of how this affects industries like finance and healthcare. A third possibility is a smart home energy optimization system. This project would involve using IoT devices and data analytics to track energy consumption and suggest ways to reduce waste. With sustainability becoming such a major concern, this kind of project could have real-world impact while also letting me work with cloud services, data management, and automation tools. Overall, these ideas represent a mix of emerging technology and practical applications, and I’m excited to see which direction my capstone eventually takes.
Learning Journal Update This week’s activities helped me think more seriously about where I am heading in my career and how my current coursework connects to future opportunities. A big takeaway for me was understanding how important it is to connect theory from class with real-world applications. The focus on the software lifecycle stood out because it applies not just in class projects but in the industry overall. Seeing how planning, coding, testing, deployment, and monitoring all fit together reminded me of advice I’ve heard from professionals, that understanding the big picture is just as important as being strong in one technical skill. I also started thinking more about internships and how they could help me bridge my current IT experience with a more developer-focused role. Internships would give me the chance to practice what I am learning in a structured environment while also getting used to the pace and expectations of industry teams. I’ve realized that getting this kind of hands-on experience is going to be just as important as completing my degree. I’m also considering graduate programs in the future, though I think my first step will be to gain industry experience and certifications in areas like AWS and Azure. Down the line, a graduate degree in computer science or information systems could strengthen my career path, but right now I am focused on applying what I am learning and preparing myself to compete for roles in cloud and DevOps.
